DLAAB Faculty Colloquium Announcement

NJEDge.Net announces the second Faculty Colloquium of 2001 - 2002:

Topic:Evaluation Strategies in Online Courses
Overview: Despite the growing popularity of online distance learning across all sectors, there is accompanying concern about the effectiveness of asynchronous learning. Is this learning effective? How engaged are the learners? This session will provide an overview of some current assessment strategies in online learning and what is being gleaned from these assessments, and will also highlight insights and experiences from noted practitioners in the field.

  • The College of St. Elizabeth in Morristown

Panelists: Vicki Cohen of Fairleigh Dickinson University and Richard Novak of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
Registration: Free to faculty, administrators, and staff of New Jersey educational institutions.

About our Panelists:

Dr. Vicki L. Cohen is Associate Professor in the School of Education at Fairleigh Dickinson University. She coordinates the Instructional Technology Program and teaches technology courses and literacy courses to graduate students. Her areas of specialty are instructional technology, literacy, and assessment. Dr. Cohen presently teaches a computer-mediated distance learning class that she designed and developed, "Literacy and Technology Across the Curriculum," designed for teachers. She was closely involved in the development and implementation of FDU's distance learning course, "The Global Challenge," that all freshmen are required to take. Dr. Cohen also teaches "Distance Learning and Children's Literature," a graduate course designed to be delivered via interactive television.

Dr. Richard J. Novak is the Executive Director for Continuous Education and Distance Learning at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. As such, he serves as the Chief Operating Officer for the University-wide Office of Continuous Education and Outreach. He is also an associate member of the graduate faculty in Adult and Continuing Education at the Rutgers Graduate School of Education. He serves as the executive director for the Center for Continuing Professional Development at Rutgers. Rich has been involved in Continuing Education for over 20 years. He has been very involved in distance education, both videoconferencing and online e-learning, for the past eight years, as well as the study of research in distance education. Rich serves regularly as a consultant in continuing and distance education to various groups and associations.

About the Faculty Colloquium Series:

The Faculty Colloquium Series is sponsored by NJEDge.Net's Distance Learning Academic Advisory Board (DLAAB.) The Colloquia are designed as informal sessions where faculty, administrators, and staff from higher education institutions and from the K-12 sector can come together with experts in the field of distance learning and educational technology to share ideas and information. Each colloquium will feature a guest speaker or panel of presenters, as well as the opportunity to engage in discussion with colleagues from across the state. Participation is free to faculty, administrators, and staff of New Jersey educational institutions. Each colloquium is conducted simultaneously at four or more sites via interactive television (ITV). Web-based delivery is also planned for future sessions.
