Guest Speaker Presentation
How NOT to Assign (and Grade) "I Agree" or "Me, Too" Posts*
Tired of simply counting how many times your students respond on a discussion board? So are they. By committing in advance to a rubric that defines a quality post or reply, students can submit a "participation portfolio" of their best work with a self-grade the instructor can accept, raise or lower. The students' "self-grade" is based on "evidence" they collect (not you) and provide in a portfolio "template" that fosters authentic conversation between students, not one-way posts that pander to the professor.

Presenter - John Fritz
Asst. VP, Instructional Technology & New Media
University of Maryland, Baltimore County

John Fritz is Assistant Vice President for Instructional Technology in UMBC's Office of Information Technology. He is responsible for UMBC's focused efforts in teaching, learning and technology and has been the primary information architect and content developer of UMBC's web site since 1997.

John holds an M.A. in English (with an emphasis in rhetoric and composition) from the University of Maryland, College Park (1989), a B.A. in English and religion from Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Maryland (1985), and a Certificate in New Media Publishing from the University of Baltimore (2002).

NJEDge.net Webinar - 10 - 11 am

Best Practices in Emergency Notification

When an urgent situation arises on campus, who will be responsible for communicating with students, faculty and staff? Using a mass notification system can help get the word out, but decisions about who sends the message—and who manages recipient information—must be made long before an emergency occurs. While mass notification systems can be simple to use, selecting the right type of system, implementing it, and activating it takes leadership. Learn about the various types of systems, how to lead your campus through the decision-making process, and best practices for using mass notification on campus in this informative webinar presented by Connect-ED executive, Pam Rose.

Please note that this best practices webinar is of benefit no matter which vendor your campus employs for Emergency Notification.

    Welcome/Introductions

Grid Computing Initiatives in Europe - Dr. David Fergusson, Deputy Director for Training Outreach and Education, National e-Science Centre at the University of Edinburgh

The advent of widely deployed grids, e-Infrastructures and Cyberinfrastructures generates a Training, Outreach and Educational challenge in all countries engaged in grid computing. There is now an imperative to train people rapidly enough to support the growth in grid activity, in research, in academia and in industry. It is crucial to rapidly attract people to training and education in grid computing and to make them aware of the advantages they will reap if they become better equipped to exploit the grid-delivered opportunities. Education must change, so that graduates of our educational systems are well equipped to understand how and when to take advantage of the new methods enabled by grid computing whatever their own specialism. Education also needs to prepare creative scientists, engineers and computer scientist so that they are best able to contribute advances in grid computing. The scale of this training and educational challenge demands much investment, human effort and innovation.

In Europe this challenge is already being addressed through a number of projects. For instance the EGEE project has had a very successful training activity for the last two years helping to disseminate understanding of how to use the maturing European grid infrastructure. Growing directly form this is the ICEAGE project which is directed towards encouraging and sustaining the take up of grid education in the European higher education sector. Both of these initiatives are also making use of the novel tools for collaboration and education which are becoming available as part of this process.

Teaching and Learning with the Open Science Grid: FERMI Lab and Grid Computing in K-12s - Marjorie Bardeen, Manager, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory

Using electronic labs, e-Labs, the I2U2 collaboration is researching the potential of the Grid to transform science education. Learn about a case study that uses grid computing techniques to support the collaborative learning of high school students investigating cosmic rays. Students guide their own learning to gather and upload science data to our e-Lab portal where they analyze data and publish results. Students use web browsers and a custom interface to perform all of these tasks. They share results in the form of online posters and ask each other questions in this asynchronous environment. Students can discover and extend the research of other students, modeling the processes of modern large-scale scientific collaborations. Also, the e-Lab portal provides tools for teachers to guide student work throughout an investigation.
Mortgage Payments: It all begins with Negative Exponents; Teaching Beginning Algebra Using a SmartBoard with Video Conferencing and Data Sharing - Roseanne Homann, Professor, Mathematics, and Michael Knight, Manager of Multimedia Services, Montgomery County Community College

Roseanne Hofmann has taught mathematics for over 40 years. Roseanne's academic background includes an A.B. (mathematics) from Immaculata University, an M. S. (statistics) from Villanova University, and an Ed. D. (mathematics education) from Temple University, concentrating on problem solving. Roseanne is interested in using technology as a tool to help students visualize and learn mathematics. She has offered over 100 graphics calculator workshops for teachers, as well as presentations on the appropriate use of technology in the classroom and online. During this presentation, Roseanne will talk about how SmartBoards can be networked and paired with videoconferencing to deliver distance math instruction.

The Performance Bottleneck - Application, Computer, or Network?
A Video conferenced presentation by Rich Carlson, Internet2

    Time: 1:30 P.M. - 3:30 P.M.

Overview: Performance tuning of network applications and Operating Systems has been long been seen as a black art. Finding the settings that work correctly for a single application or over a specific network path is challenging enough, but making thing work over a wide range of conditions is extremely challenging. To make things even more difficult, every problem exhibits the same symptom - the application does not perform as expected (the network is slow). This session will provide an introduction to network performance troubleshooting techniques, methods, and tools that, if used in a systematic manner, can help everyone find and fix these common problems.

DLAAB Colloquium: Is the Technology Worth It?

    2:00 - 4:00 pm

William Paterson University will be hosting a DLAAB April 7th Colloquium from 2:00 - 4:00 PM.

Presenters: Dr. Catherine Kelley, Assistant Provost for Educational Technology, Fairleigh Dickinson University Dr. Sandra Miller, Director of Instruction & Research Technology, William Paterson University

Overview: Faculty and others interested in using educational technologies to enhance their classes often ask whether delivering a class fully online, in hybrid format, or supplementing with the use of technologically-advanced materials is worth the time and money that it takes to develop such classes. Does the use of technology improve, hinder, or make no difference? Our presentation will outline current research and thinking on assessment frameworks for using technology to enhance teaching and learning. We will also discuss ways to ask this question that are likely to lead to useful answers for faculty members and administrators, and that will not result in the "no significant difference" phenomenon that has often been reported in the research literature.

    Working Title:
How Does the Millennial Generation Differ from Other Generations at the Same Age?

    Description:
They already know that they don’t want to work or play like their parents’ generation. They are called the Millennials, Gen Y, Next Gen, Echo Boomers, or…”Don’t Label Us.” They use information, and learn, differently. They were born between 1979 and 1994, and they are the largest generation since the Boomers (1946 to 1964). Millennials currently crowd our colleges and universities, both because they are a larger generation and because more of them are going to college than ever before. Millennial researcher, Richard Sweeney, will discuss how Millennials differ from generations before them at the same age and explore the implications for colleges and universities. Mr. Sweeney will then pose questions to a live panel of about 12 Millennials videoconferencing from three different NJ colleges/universities, as he attempts to confirm and expand on the research. Audience participants at all sites will be given an opportunity to ask their own questions of the panel.

Description: NJEDge.Net will be conducting a regional membership meeting to provide an update on current plans for the next generation NJEDge Network and to seek input, comments and suggestions from the membership before finalizing recommendations to the President's Council. The new hybrid architecture provides new capabilities, improved quality of service and better positions the NJ higher education community for the future. A primary objective in these planning efforts has been to reduce costs to the membership by in-sourcing the network core and introducing additional access providers to increase competition and adjust to changing market conditions. An overview of the new proposed architecture will be presented as well as a detailed presentation of new pricing plans.

Reach Beyond the Classroom: Humanize your online course!

From the University System of Georgia to Hawaii's eSchool, US institutions of all shapes, sizes, and missions have been successfully using web conferencing tools such as Horizon Wimba's Live Classroom to hold highly engaging - and cost effective - online classes and meetings. This session will closely examine how Horizon Wimba's collaborative tools can accommodate both the instructional and administrative needs of New Jersey's diverse post-secondary institutions.

We will discuss faculty-friendly, easy-to-use yet powerful tools for:

    • Adding synchronous (Live Classroom) and asynchronous vocal collaboration (Voice Tools) into your course online courses. All a learner or instructor needs is a computer with a microphone and speakers, and an internet connection.
    • Using and managing Horizon Wimba's suite of tools through our PowerLink for WebCT Campus Edition + Vista and Building Block for Blackboard.

If there is interest from the group, and if time permits, we will also discuss creating accessible, CMS-ready learning objects from Microsoft Word documents with Course Genie.

Students on Copyright Issues Part I

What do students need to know about copyright laws?

Students need to be knowledgeable about copyright issues. Infringements can affect their academic standing and can have serious legal repercussions for their institutions. The proliferation of the Internet, and the rules set by the Teach Act and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act have changed how we view and use copyright in academia. Topics for this teleconference will include fair use, peer-to-peer file sharing, piracy, the public performance of copyrighted works, and using copyrighted materials on websites.

Rubrics in the Age of Accountability: Transparent Assessment in Support of Learning

Rubrics (definition) provide a powerful tool for grading and assessment that can also serve as a transparent and inspiring guide to learning. Rubrics have been used to increase transparency and accountability across K-12 and higher education, and in corporate and govenment settings. This session will demystify rubrics by reviewing types of rubrics (holistic, analytic, general, and task-specific), steps to creating a rubric, and effective uses of rubrics (by students and faculty). We will explore characteristics of quality rubrics through construction of a "Rubric of Rubrics." An online tool for rubric development will be shared interactively with the audience. We will also consider the importance of rubrics in encouraging self-reflective learning.

    Verizon Day

    8:30 am - 2:30 pm

The account team is cordially inviting you to our Verizon road show scheduled for Thursday, January 20th from 8:30-2:30 at the Rutgers CORE auditorium on Busch Campus, Piscataway.

In 2005, Verizon is consolidating all of higher education under two Corporate Account Managers to unify the way higher education is handled within Verizon’s Enterprise Solutions Group.

The Road Show is designed to introduce the account team to all of higher education, and to conduct presentations on where Verizon is heading as an corporation. Moreover, we will be introducing new products and services that we plan on rolling out as overlay services on the MPLS network, the NJEDge.Net IP/VPN extranet, or value added services to enhance the network.

This presentation is an excellent opportunity to learn more about Verizon as a company as well as what the account team is positioning through NJEDge.Net. Refreshments will be provided in the morning and lunch will also be provided courtesy of Verizon.

Attend a visit from Turning Technologies (http://www.turningtechnologies.com) to demonstrate their primary product in higher education, the Turning Point student response systems at Drew University

As many of you are aware of by now, Turning Point allows you to add real-time interaction to any PowerPoint (or other Microsoft Office product) presentation. It helps to gather students' responses to a question and displays the aggregate responses in a table or chart. Its vPad feature also allows you to pose more open-ended questions such as fill-in-the-blank and short essay. It does all of this by creating an additional toolbar within Microsoft Office applications that allows interaction in the classroom, generating and importing question lists in Microsoft Word as well as viewing reporting results in Microsoft Excel.

Drew will be piloting Turning Point for the Spring semester and would be interested in collaborating with other faculty and support staff from neighboring institutions that have used the application or plan to in the future.

    10:00 Introduction
    10:15 Instructional Design Perspective
    10:30 Lecture123 Presentation and Demo
    11:15 Faculty Case Studies
    12:15 Conclusion

For the past 2 years a small team of seasoned Rutgers computer scientists and faculty have developed a simple and natural elearning system making it extremely easy to present, record, and playback lectures and educational content along with a patent pending question/answer collaboration layer. Everything is web based with a focus on ease of use.

Lecture123 addresses this major flaw of asynchronous tools by bringing asynchronous learning closer to the synchronous one, while maintaining the low cost, simplicity and two degrees of freedom for students - space and time. Lecture123 allows creation of online materials which gradually, through the interactive question and answer capability, converge to the point where all questions have been asked and answered. This is accomplished using our patent pending technology of incorporating questions and answers directly, seamlessly, and simply into the presentation.

Come learn more about Lecture123, see how it’s being used, and explore the possibilities of use in your institution.
