ePoster: Transforming a Library Web into an Information Commons Portal

The Sidney Silverman Library of Bergen Community College transformed its website into a portal by restructuring and integrating library and college online resources into one cohesive whole. After digesting findings from on-going, informal usability studies, key access concerns were addressed, including creating a Windows active desktop that portrayed “jumping-off” points for the most used functions on the information commons workstations. New user-friendly interfaces were created for the core library functions of online catalog searching and article searches in the electronic databases. New user-sortable tables were created for easy access to library instruction materials, faculty websites, and college web resources.

Biography: Mark Thompson

A librarian for more than 25 years, Mark Thompson has managed reference services and developed information delivery tools, including websites, intranets and database search interfaces, for all types of users: corporate managers, faculty, students and the public.
