ePoster: Creating Community: Student Orientation to Distance LearningLaura Zieger, New Jersey City University [bio]Universities offering distance education will see the incredible impact a successful orientation can have on its retention rates. In this analysis, the author identifies specific objectives of successful orientations, including the creation of a community of learners, and relates to what extent one university’s orientation program is successful in achieving the desired outcomes for its distance learning students. Recommendations for future planning of orientations for distance learning programs are provided. Biography: Laura ZiegerLaura Zieger is a full-time Assistant Professor of Educational Technology at New Jersey City University. In 2005, she earned her doctorate in Educational Technology from Pepperdine University where her dissertation research focused on community-building orientation programs for distance learning students. Laura is a judge for the Software & Information Industry Association’s CODIE awards. She is also a reviewer for the Journal of Interactive Online Learning. Laura has presented at international conferences and published on the subject of distance education, student orientation and teacher education. |
