This workshop will provide both an introduction to metadata concepts and principles as well as practical guidance in developing a strategy for describing and managing your resources, using metadata. The focus of the workshop will be on describing and managing digital video assets, but the principles and strategies can be applied to any digital resource. Topics to be covered:

Overview of Metadata Principles and Technologies

  • What is metadata? Why do I need it? How do I use it?

The current metadata landscape

  • The state of the art for digital video metadata
  • Making effective metadata choices

Implementing metadata

  • Principles of metadata design and implementation
  • Repository architectures
  • Participating in exising initiatives
    • New Jersey Digital Highway
    • Moving Image Collections project
