Building Community in an Online Course: Strategies from "The American Film," NJ's WebCT Exemplary Course

This presentation will focus on stratefies for building community in an online course, using inventive approaches that foster learner-to-learner, learner-to-content, and learner-to-instructor interaction and collaboration. "The American Film," a WebCT Exemplary Course for 2005, will serve as a model. The presentation will also highlight criteria used to evaluate "Interaction and Collaboration" in the WebCT Exemplary Course Project nomination rubric.

Biography: Thomas Valasek

Thomas Valasek, Prof. of Communiction & Film Studies at Raritan Valley Community College, teaches two online Film Studies courses. "The American Film" was selected as a WebCT Exemplary Course for 2005. Prof. Valasek has completed two studies of student persistence in online courses during a Mid-Career Fellowship at Princeton University and a CAITL Faculty Fellowship at Raritan Valley. He is the author of a film textbook, "Frameworks: An Introduction to Film Studies."
