Higher education institutions are becoming increasingly reliant on their high-performance network infrastructures to support daily academic functions in a timely, reliable and flexible manner. Use of this infrastructure to help promote the open exchange of ideas and facilitate communications needs to be carefully balanced against security threats coming from sophisticated types of attacks and extended use of remote access technologies.
This presentation will discuss how higher education IT departments can strike this balance by building "lines of defense" with a layered security stance that will help them to (1) control who has access to what, (2) protect against application level attacks from worms, trojans and malware, (3) facilitate encrypted communications across remote connections and (4) detect and deny file level viruses or spyware.
