Lynn Braender & Craig Kapp
Students Living Ethically and Safely in a Digital World Biography Abstract: Students Living Ethically and Safely in a Digital World The world is emerging into one where student work, learning, and socializing occur in cyberspace. As they enter this new space, their values and behaviors are being tested; their reactions require new responses. At The College of New Jersey, we have created an online learning environment where students can learn about cyberspace, its potential dangers, and ways to protect themselves and their community. But students are not passive learners in this environment. They have the ability to influence content, determine the importance of materials and discussions, and shape the way we act. Students not only learn, they also create knowledge.
Students Living Ethically and Safely in a Digital World Biography Craig Kapp has most recently worked as the Assistant Director for Instructional Technology at The College of New Jersey, and is the lead architect of TCNJ's course management system, SOCS. Craig also serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Masters program in Technology Education at TCNJ and in the Undergraduate program in Interactive Multimedia. Craig has taught a wide variety of courses, such as Authoring and Multimedia Development, Introduction to Interactive Computing and Educational Applications of Computing for School Administrators. He has since left TCNJ and is pursuing his M.P.S. as a full-time graduate student at New York University's Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP). He plans to one day return to academia as a faculty member teaching in the area of Interactive Multimedia. Abstract: Helping Students Work in a Virtual World As a rule, Business students spend much of their time working in teams, and much of this work can be completed and enhanced through the use of virtual space. This session will showcase a partnership between the School of Business and Instructional Technology Services to create a virtual space using a variety of commonly available web-based tools such as wikis, podcasts, RSS feeds and collaborative documents. We will focus on the construction of a workspace that supports collaboration, and will demonstrate techniques used in Management of Information Technology courses to support virtual group work. We will also show how student performance can be assessed through an online peer evaluation system. |
