Summary

Advances in biomedicine and its effective translation from the bench to the bedside (and back) requires the efficient and secure development and deployment of cyber-infrastructure (i.e. computing, network and storage platforms) in conjunction with analytic, and interpretive methods to optimize the integration and transformation of increasingly voluminous biomedical data from high-throughput experiments and Internet enabled medical devices. The challenge is how one goes about taking advantage of available cyber-infrastructure to enable the goal of realizing proactive, predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory health.

To this end, the mini health care conference will address the following key question – where is the need and where are the users? It will bring together speakers from academia, industry and the National Cancer Institute who will outline ongoing research in basic (Guna Rajagopal, Cancer Institute of New Jersey), clinical (Kim Hirshfield, Cancer Institute of New Jersey), translational (Eric Perakslis, Johnson & Johnson Centocor R&D), and population sciences (Ben Crabtree, Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Marsh Reichman, National Cancer Institute) where the availability of cyber-infrastructure is critical to advance their respective scientific, translational and health care delivery missions. There will also be time allocated for in-depth discussion between speakers and the audience on some of the key issues that need to be addressed if we are to succeed in this endeavor.
