Goals

  1. To ensure NJEDge.Net goals and objectives align with the missions of the membership and the overall NJ higher education enterprise.
  1. To leverage the collective buying power of the membership to achieve economies-of-scale through statewide buying consortia:
    1. Internet services
    2. Internet2 access
    3. Statewide videoconferencing resources
    4. Long distance telephone service
    5. Software site licensing
    6. Emergency notification systems
  1. To represent the common interests of the institutions it serves in leveraging relationships with vendors and in working with statewide and/or national programs and initiatives:
    1. Partnership with corporations such as Verizon and Cisco. 
    2. Maintenance of an active vendor affiliate program
    3. Member of the national StateNets consortium
    4. Member of various national buying consortia  
  1. To identify new application services that will bring value to the membership and provide leadership in the implementation of collaborative statewide applications:
    1. Videoconferencing, streaming video and multicast video
    2. Authentication and security
    3. Digital library initiatives
    4. Network attached storage  
  1. To support outreach within the State of New Jersey
    1. Facilitating workforce development initiatives
    2. Promoting systemic collaboration with K-12
    3. Extending the reach of other not-for-profit and cultural entities such as the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Liberty Science Center, NJ Historical Society, etc
  1. To more vigorously pursue efforts to strengthen partnerships with business and industry and to participate more fully in the development of scientific and technological advances needed to stimulate the economy and provide New Jersey industries with a competitive advantage.
  1. To ensure that the resources of the network can be utilized fully and effectively by member institutions by providing training and professional development programs:
    1. Blackboard, Angel, Sakai, Moodle and other open source and proprietary learning management systems
    2. Best practices in managing campus data and video networks
    3. Faculty development programs and workshops
  1. To build a sense of community and information sharing among members:
    1. The Annual NJEDge.Net Conference
    2. Annual best practices showcase
    3. NJIT students intern at NJEDge.Net headquarters as web designers and systems programmers
  1. To organize and coordinate member driven activity groups focused on specific communities of interest:
    1. Educational Activities Task Force (EATF)
    2. Distance Leaning Academic Advisory Board (DLAAB)
    3. The Cyber Infrastructure group
    4. Data Resources Group (DRG)
    5. Video Resources Group (VRG)
    6. Voice Services Group (VSG)
    7. Networking and Performing Arts Initiative
    8. Statewide Network Authentication Working Group 
       
  2. To provide leadership in research and development of current and next generation technologies:
    1. Multicast
    2. Federated Access Management (Shibboleth, OpenID)
    3. Video over IP & HD Video
    4. Video streaming
    5. Voice over IP (VoIP)
    6. Shared Storage Repositories
    7. Desktop video conferencing
    8. IPv6
    9. Advancements in Web technologies (Web2.0 etc)
  1. To raise funds and obtain property by grant, governmental appropriation, gift, bequest or devise from the public and from all other available sources, to invest and reinvest the same to apply the income and principal therefore, as the Board of Trustees may determine, exclusively for such educational, scientific and academic purposes.
