VRG Meeting Minutes - May 9, 2001

Meeting sites:
  1. Middlesex County College
  2. Burlington County College
  3. Brookdale Community College
  4. County College of Morris

  • The group asked for and received clarification regarding who is invited to the May 11th meeting with Verizon.

  • The group reviewed open questions for the May 11th meeting and asked G.Carroll to forward them to George Laskaris. It was suggested that the questions be communicated to Verizon in advance of the May 11 meeting so that the answers could be provided at that meeting. (After the meeting Charlie McMickle prepared a detailed list of questions and sent them to the video technical committee that he chairs)

  • Charlie McMickle commented on QoS and routers. He noted that we need to be careful. Vendors such as Nortel, Marconi etc. must show that they can handle QoS. Charlie has been in contact with representatives from Marconi and Nortel.

  • Please get questions to Verizon before Friday so they give answers on Friday!

  • Tom Lancaster commented on the desirability of a statewide educational T.V. channel. Bernie Solomon supported this plan. A cable channel would provide wide exposure for colleges and universities.

  • Sheri Prupis agreed to do a survey of how many colleges and universities have cable channels in their county.

ACCORD VIDEO PORTAL-CODER COMPATIBILITY

Charlie McMickle discussed bandwidth requirements for video applications including video streaming. He also spoke about networks and gateways. For example, there will be a need to gateway to the satellite uplink at William Paterson University. He reviewed the gatekeeper function in CISCO equipment that will be deployed on campuses and he pointed out the difference between bandwidth management and bandwidth control.

CLICK-TO-MEET

This product from FVC has some very desirable features. Charlie has been using it and is pleased with the capability of the product. It works very well.

Click-To-Meet has some capability that Cisco does not have. The product can manage MCUs. It is very close to being able to manage the Accord MCU 100%.

Charlie suggests that VRG members try the product. Need 144 kbps circuit, IP addresses, etc.

The next meeting will be held on June 13 at 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
