NJEDge.Net - The New Jersey Higher Education Network

VRG Meeting Minutes - June 13, 2001

George A. Carroll -reported on the NJEdge.Net detailed planning process, which is underway with Verizon. He also gave an update on NJIN including the departure of Gabor Gabanyi for a position at UMDNJ, the closing of the NJIN office at Rutgers, and the pending transfer of all NJIN assets to NJEdge.Net

Sheri Lynn Prupis - provided additional information on our current work with Verizon to collect basic information regarding the colleges and their circuits. She also noted the work we must do to implement a billing process for the colleges and universities.

Sheri mentioned the satellite uplink at William Peterson University, which was discussed at the NJEDge.Net board meeting on June 12th. The VRG will be involved in planning for the use of this facility.

She also reported on NJVU plans for programs and events, which are being scheduled. The NJEDge.Net board put together a small working group to help guide the NJVU effort.

Sheri reported on results of the CATV survey that she and the NJEDge.Net staff are conducting at the request of Tom Lancaster and the other VRG members.

Charlie McMickle - reported on a technical meeting held today with Cisco and Verizon representatives regarding H323 testing and quality of service (QoS).

He explained the complexity of QoS implementation in this network. He stressed the need for Verizon to know exactly what are the video needs for each institution and therefore the total bandwidth requirement for the network. He noted that a number of features of our planned network, such as Internet traffic load balancing, would be quite excellent.

The connectivity between NJEDge.Net and Access New Jersey has been tested and appears to be seamless. Considerable time has been spent reviewing the network gatekeeper capability, which will be Cisco products.

The next meeting will be held on July 11th on Ocean County College. It will be a face-to-face gathering.
