I've seen different heading and layouts for essays.
Is there a preferred format?

Essays must be typed. The preferred format is

double-spaced,
1" margins on the top, bottom and right,
1 1/2 " margin on the left
12 point type, and
an appropriate business font.

I strongly recommend that you write your papers using a computer.

Include a heading with your name, the course number and title and the date. The heading should be placed in the upper right hand corner of the first page. Why?

There is no need for a page number on the first page. Beginning with page 2, place the page number in the upper right hand corner. Some instructors prefer that students place their last name with the page number, e.g. "Smith 2."

Center your title. Avoid questions as titles. Do not underline or use quotation marks for your title unless it actually contains quoted material or refers to the title of another work.

Proofread your paper before you turn it in. Check for spelling and grammar errors.

Save a copy of your paper for yourself -- preferably both a paper copy and a copy on disk.
